Resume is a French term that means “Summary”, to describe a shorter CV.

The resume is mostly used to apply for a job in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Curriculum vitae is most requested by European country.

The format can be classic or creative, like a CV, and the differences are related to other aspects that we explain below.

Different contents and goals

Resume

  • Is shorter than CV, does not exceed one page and in it you have to emphasize your personal qualities.
  • The aim of the resume is to call the recruiter’s attention, providing the most important information in a few lines and demonstrating that you are suited to the job for which you are applying.

Curriculum Vitae

  • It is longer than the Resume, 2-3 pages, while in America it can reach 10 pages.
  • It is used to do a detailed summary of the candidate’s life: personal data, studies, work experiences, language and computer skills, including hobbies and interests, regardless the job to which you aspire.

Type of company and position

Resume

  • It is suitable for commercial and management positions; for media, audiovisual and creative positions.
  • Usually people who are seeking employment in the United States does the resume for each position again.
  • It does not necessarily have to contain information in chronological order nor must completely fill the entire career.

Curriculum Vitae

  • It is suitable for academic, scientific – technological, medical, investigation and research positions.
  • Everything is listed in chronological order and in the section on education the details of the high school are omitted in favor of academic education.

So, which format to use?

For the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zeland is more appropriate to send the resume. Americans and Canadians use the CV when they apply for a job abroad or if they are looking for a job in academic field.

For European country is preferable to send the CV.

How to turn your CV in Resume?

  • FIRST: keep in your mind that the presentation should be fit in with the type of job and company to which you are interested.
  • SECOND: summarize the most significant experiences related to the job and define the results and goals you want to achieve.
  • THIRD: add one or more visual elements, related to the job, and you will have more opportunities than others to make an interview.
