Interpreter converts spoken or sign language statements from one language to another. This is often done in only one direction, normally into the interpreter’s native language, but may be on a two-way basis.
Job Requirements:
Translator converts written material from one or more ‘source languages’ into the ‘target language’, ensuring that the translated version conveys the meaning of the original as clearly as possible. The target language is normally the translator’s mother tongue.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- American Translators Association.
- Being expert in two languages.
Alternate Careers:
- Technical Writer: takes complex technical research data and terminology and translates into understandable text for manuals, documents and published works. A bachelor’s degree in communications, English or journalism is usually necessary to enter this field.
- High School Foreign Language Teacher.
